On April 16 17, 1999, Musalaha hosted a conference with John Dawson of the International Reconciliation Coalition. Around 100 people, (one-third Palestinian, one-third Jewish, and one-third international), attended from all over the country. We were pleased with the participation, and many were impacted by Mr. Dawson's discussions on "Cleansing and Healing the Foundations."
During the seminars, Dawson allowed time for participants to publicly share their thoughts and responses. Several felt led to speak about their own identity as a Palestinian or Jew, as well as about their personal feelings and experiences. An important moment was when a Messianic Jewish believer emotionally asked forgiveness of his Palestinian brothers and they mutually declared their love and respect for each other.
While the lecture hall was the center of our conference, the participants were encouraged to carry the spirit of reconciliation into their relationships. Many used their free time to learn more about the stories of their brothers and sisters from different backgrounds. We were challenged to "really hear" each other, what each person was saying as an individual and not as an Arab or Jew. For it is in these exchanges, where hearts and minds are open to each other, that the Lord draws us together and to himself.
Musalaha also provided a program for the 29 children in attendance. Their leaders (Janine and YWAM team) chose "Peace" as their theme, and the children explored the meaning of peace through artwork and drama. The Lord provided beautiful weather, and the children were also able to build relationships through outdoor activities. Their time together was a great opportunity to break down stereotypes and build foundations of understanding and acceptance.
We praise the Lord for his work in our hearts and for how he continues to stretch and shape us into his faithful followers.
